Canine Physiotherapy

All dogs can benefit from some form of regular physiotherapy assessment and treatment.
Some reasons your dog may benefit from physiotherapy:

They have recently undergone a surgical procedure.
They suffer from conditions such as but not limited to: Arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia, IVDD, cruciate disease.
They struggle with age related reduced mobility.
They compete or train regularly in dogs sports such as agility, IGP, Flyball or obdeience.

Physiotherapy may help to reduce physical discomfort your dog may be feeling, but it may also help to prevent more serious health problems later in life. If your dog suffers for example from arthritis in one joint, the other joints may experience wear due to overcompensating.

It can also be an essential part of maintaining and preventing injuries in active dogs, regular physiotherapy can help identify and treat niggles early to avoid larger injuries.

Physiotherapy is always individualised and holistic. Each session encompasses different types of treatments which can be used to support each dog after a thorough assessment. Some of the treatments in a physiotherapist's toolkit are described below.

Manual Therapies

Mobilisation, massage and hands on therapies

A variety of different techniques may be used to improve tissue condition, break down adhesions, release trigger points, improve tissue mobility. These techniques can reduce pain, promote recovery and removal of toxins through increased circulation. They can also improve range of motion and aid function.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment which stimulates the cells use visible red laser. Encouraging tissue healing, reducing inflammation and decreasing pain. It is often used to reduce pain in arthritic joints, encourage healing post-injury or post-surgery, and reduce muscle tension and trigger points.

Exercise Therapy

Individualised exercise programmes are produced for each patient, tailored to improve function, range of motion and strength for their condition. Exercise programmes are demonstrated during the session and then sent out after each session.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

PEMF generates a small electric field similar to the body’s natural electric field, which stimulates the bodies cells to improve healing & reduce pain. It is best used to reduce arthritic pain, encourage nerve and bone healing.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation

Electrical stimulation may be used for a variety of reasons, including pain management, muscle contraction, and swelling control. In early stage rehabilitation, pain control is one of the more common reasons for it's use.
